  4.     CROWE FLIES. Despite an offer from George Bush to extend
  5. him for a third two-year tour as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
  6. of Staff, Admiral William Crowe has decided to retire in
  7. September. His likely successor: JCS Vice Chairman General
  8. Robert Herres.

  10.     OUR MAN IN TEGUCIGALPA. At his weekly lunch with George
  11. Bush last Thursday, Vice President Dan Quayle was handed an
  12. assignment: during a visit to Central America this week, urge
  13. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica to build
  14. pressure on Panama to get rid of strongman Manuel Antonio
  15. Noriega. With Bush and Secretary of State James Baker
  16. preoccupied with China, NATO and the Soviet Union, Quayle is
  17. becoming a familiar figure in Central America. This is his
  18. second visit to the region since taking office; he goes to the
  19. Caribbean later this month.

  21.     HELP WANTED. No fewer than 47 candidates have said no to
  22. the Defense Department for the job of Under Secretary for
  23. Acquisition, who buys $160 billion in goods and services each
  24. year. A major reason: new ethics legislation that bars returning
  25. to the defense industry after leaving the Pentagon.

  27.     HE'LL PASS. Former pro quarterback Jack Kemp once said that
  28. if he had not gone into politics, he would have liked to be
  29. commissioner of the National Football League. Now Secretary of
  30. Housing and Urban Development, Kemp wants to squash speculation
  31. that he is a candidate to replace retiring N.F.L. Commissioner
  32. Pete Rozelle. Kemp's office says the Secretary turned down an
  33. interview with the executive-search firm hired to find Rozelle's
  34. successor.

  36.     BLOOD SPORT. Consultants are predicting a slugfest in New
  37. Jersey's race for Governor, which pits old-school Democrat
  38. James J. Florio against Republican right-winger Jim Courter. The
  39. G.O.P. intends to go after Florio for the patronage and
  40. corruption he is accused of nurturing as Camden County's
  41. political boss. When Courter was asked if he would charge Florio
  42. with corruption, incumbent Thomas Kean leaped to Courter's
  43. defense. "I'm sure he would never do that," Kean said, "unless
  44. it were true."
